A Mombasa based scholar has raised alarm over the drop of the education standards in the coastal region.

The scholar claimed that girls have dropped in their performance, unlike boys who performed well in the recently released KCSE exams.

The senior chemistry lecturer at Pwani University Najya Muhammed said boys dominated top positions in the 2017 KCSE exams in the regions.

Muhammed noted that Kilifi, Taita Taveta, Mombasa, Tana River, Lamu, Kwale didn’t have candidates in the top 100 categories nationally. According to the scholar, the massive failure is due irresponsible parenting, absentee fathers, drugs and miraa abuse and poverty which affected the students in the region.

Muhammed called on education Cs Fred Matiang’I and TSC to take legal action against teachers who have failed to teach well to boost performance.

"Poor performance, especially on girls, may have been caused by poor teaching techniques by teachers.

Teachers who report to work while drunk should be suspended for the education sector to improve," said the scholar.
