Books worth Sh1.8 million went up in flames when a fire razed down a building at Atela Mixed Day School in Rachuonyo South Sub County in Homa Bay County.

The fire incident that happened on Friday night consumed a room within the building which acted as a library.

The building was also being used as a laboratory and store for other school items.

According to the school Principal Millicent Ndinya, two form four students who had arrived in the school for Saturday morning lesson discovered the incident and reported to her.

“I got the information at 8am from a group of my students that the school store had burnt down,” said Ndinya.

Confirming the incident to this writer, Rachuonyo South Officer Commanding Police Division Patrick Onsando said the incident could have been an arson attack.

“Our investigations have revealed that one of the windows of the buildings was broken and someone must have gained entry in the building through the window,” said Onsando.

The OCPD said that the fire consumed a section of the building which had books.

“The storage room was divided into units which had books and other learning material.

The attackers torched the area that had the books,” revealed Onsando.

The officer further said they have launched investigations into the incident.

He asked the public to provide information regarding the matter to avail it to the police.
