Kisumu County Education director, Sylvester Mulambe has claimed that school fires being witnessed in various parts of the country are being caused by students who fear sitting for exams.
The director was quick to point out the fact that some cases of school fires are being caused by outsiders.
He proposed that students should be allowed to participate in the formulation of school rules and regulations, so as the tame the rampant cases of fire incidences, especially in schools.
“Fire cases have been reported in 13 schools across Kisumu County since January this year,” said Mulambe.
The director was speaking at a stakeholders meeting aimed at coming out with mechanisms and measures to prevent fire outbreaks in Kisumu county.
The meeting was held at the Lions high school on Wednesday.
Also present was Kisumu County Commission Mr. John Elung’ata who urged head teachers to carry out the activities in schools without favour.
According to government statistics, buildings especially dormitories have been torched in over 60 schools in the country in the period of less than 3 months.
