The Ministry of Education has been challenged to lift the ban on tuition in order to help teachers cover the syllabus early.

Speaking on Tuesday during a tour in primary schools at Gesima Zone in Nyamira County, PrimarySchool Heads Association chair Charles Bosire led a host of headteachers in calling on the government to lift the ban on tuition.

Mr Bosire said many schools lagged behind in syllabus completion pointing to the September teachers strike.

“We have done an assessment and the truth is that many schools did not finish their syllabuses. We want to urge the government to lift the tuition ban so that we can get a chance to finalise on syllabuses for the sake of our children,” Bosire said.

He however, cautioned that the government’s role would be lifting the ban and give parents and teachers a chance to negotiate on modalities on conducting the tuition.

“The government input should only be lifting the ban and nothing else. Thereafter, as parents and teachers, we can sit and agree on modalities concerning the tuition because we have done that before,” Bosire added.

His counterpart from Nyaronge Primary School Josephine Nyangena said lifting the ban will also help in improving academic standards in the region which has reportedly diminished in a period of five years.

“This region used to do well nationally but it is evident that we have fallen short to impress in major papers. This is because many a times we are unable to finish syllabuses due to other technicalities. It is time to lift the ban for the sake of improving education in the country,” she said.
