St Patrick’s special school for the mentally handicapped in Thika sub-county has started an initiative to support the pupils' education by engaging them in cooking among other extra curricula activities.
According to the deputy head teacher Irene Gachathi, the cookery programme is funded by the parents by making a monthly contribution of Sh100.
She said that the school also depends on well wishers for funding since they do not reap any profits from the cookery.
Diana Mbuthia, the programme coordinator said that the programme was an important activity for both the staff and pupils.
She added that the programme enabled the pupils and students to interact outside class work, and helped in coordination for the pupils who learn how to use recipe and procedures during making various foods.
Mbuthia said the programme had helped the pupils feel empowered, proud, and encouraged.
The activity has also empowered them with special life skills, communication and builds their self esteem for growth and self knowledge and realization.
