Moiben MP Silah Tiren has called for the re-introduction of ranking in schools to promote competition in schools around the country.

Speaking during the launch of a training forum for beneficiaries of the Wings to Fly initiative in Nairobi, Tiren said ranking had improved children grades and its abolition has really brought down the level of education.

"Abolition of ranking by the former Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi has led to low working morale among teachers since they can not see how their school is performing compared to others nationally," he said.

He said through ranking, students are put on a level playing field for them to compete, thus improving not only the schools grades, but also individual ones.

"I urge the new Cabinet Secretary for Education Fred Matiang'i to re-introduce ranking in schools which will enhance healthy competition," he said.

He said that Matang'i is competent and will bring back the Education ministry's lost glory. He urged the national and county governments to increase the budgetary allocation for money meant for bursaries so that more bright and needy students could benefit.
