Kehancha Mixed Secondary School in Kuria West Sub-County risks sinking due to the surrounding gold mining activities in the neighborhood.
The school Principal Daniel Mirumbe told journalists who visited the school that several mining holes dug towards the school posed a threat for the more than 500 students and the entire school community.
He regretted that dormitories, toilets and other school infrastructure have developed cracks as a result of explosion from the excavation of gold in the nearby gmines.
“I am worried that many tunnels dug underground by the gold miners surrounding may sink may sink our structures any time,’’ he said.
Mirumbe cited a 120 meters dug borehole which used to serve students with enough water but now is dry due to the nearby mining hole which uses pumped water during the mining process.
“Since we started experiencing extreme water shortfall from our borehole students fetch water outside the school in river Tebese about a kilometre away,” he said.
Parents also expressed fear that continued uncontrolled mining around the school could put to risk the lives of their children in school.
Two parents Janet Mwita and Sarah Boke Chacha want the Government and the relevant authority to intervene and help them drive out the miners and secure the school from further encroachment by the community.
