Students attending tuition at Gatunguru Primary School, in Kiambu County, were forced to go back home after strong winds pulled two classrooms’ roofs. More than 21 class eight pupils who were going for their tuition in the classes were forced back home while others joined Mariaini Academy where the situation was a bit calm. The school head, Lukas Mutonga, expressed his worries on the situation in the school and called upon students who come from far to terminate tuition lessons until the rain ends. “Students should exercise caution as the rivers close to the school are also flooding. Parents should stop sending their students for classes till the season ends. Meanwhile, the students can as well read from their homesteads,” Mutonga said. Class eight, seven and six classes were the most affected where all sheets were removed by the strong winds. Inside the classes, lots of stagnant water hindered any learning as chairs remained wet and the classrooms inhabitable. Teachers who were present were tasked with helping make sure all pupils arrived to their homes safely. “The class repair will not kick off anytime soon due to the continued high rains. We ask the county government to come in and provide the school with funds to rebuild the school,” said Mutonga. The school roof damage was approximated to cost Sh 500,000. The crisis comes some weeks after a neighbouring shopping centre, Mariaini, residents decried poor state of roads from high rainfall.
