A school has suspended 12 students allegedly for refusing to shave their hair. The students from Rangenyo Girls High School were seen at Nyamira bus terminus stranded in town with their boxes, mattresses and other personal belongings, something that attracted the attention of the public.

But the concerned public led by the town's boda boda riders took the girls back to school, demanding an explanation from the school head concerning the dismissal.

They however did not get audience with Principal Lydiah Onyoni who locked the school's main gate.

Yesterday morning, there was tension around the school with the riders demanding immediate transfer of the principal over what they said was high-handedness on the girls.

The girls were also readmitted to the school after Nyamira South sub-county education officer Isaac Ombati's intervention.

According to a student witness, the said girls had rebelled against the school authorities after they were forced to shave their hair.

"The school had hired a private barber to shave all students but others refused after they raised concerns over allegedly unhygienic conditions they were being subjected to," the student said.
