A primary school in Kisii County yesterday embarked on a tree planting exercise in an effort to combat the environmental degradation of the area.
Nyangusu Primary in Nyamache Sub County will be make an event of the program every month. This activity also seeks to bring greater unity with residents of the cosmopolitan region in Kisii.
The school head Mr. Alvin Ogero hopes that the exercise will be used to conserve the environment and also double to create peace among the Abagusii and Maasai communities who occupy the surrounding area.
“We have started this initiative and it will be done every month. As you can see, this area is almost becoming a desert due to rampant cutting down of trees. Also, we will use it as a perfect opportunity to preach peace in the area”, he said.
He said that residents had begun to engage themselves in charcoal burning which was harming the environment, but that the cutting down of trees in government territories was unwarranted.
“It is even shocking that people are even cutting down trees on government land. We are taking this as an avenue to sensitize the public about conserving our environment”, he added.
Mr. Ogero urged neighbouring schools to start similar initiatives, a collective effort would be needed to restore environmental sanity in the border region. “This will not be done by Nyangusu primary alone. I urge our neighbouring schools to embark on this serious program for the better of this region”, he said.
