Nyakondiere Primary school in Sameta Kisii County was on Tuesday closed due to lack of toilets.
According to the health officer Evans Siocha who visited the school, the institution lacks toilets for the kids to use when responding to nature.
"We will not allow children continue coming to school without good toilets. The school management must construct new toilets for the kids to report back,” said the health officer.
He accused the teachers of not taking action even after noticing that the current toilets had collapsed due to the heavy rains being received in the region.
“It is big shame for the teachers in the school for allowing the kids to be at school even after realizing the toilets had collapsed, unsafe for use,” he said.
A teacher who requested for anonymity said junior teachers tried to persuade the head teacher to have the school closed for the toilets to be constructed but the head teacher refused.
“Lack of toilets in the school should be blamed on the head teacher because we tried to persuade him we close the school for one week for new toilets to be constructed but he refused and insisted that kids must be in school,” said the teacher.
The teacher added that the school will only be reopened once the toilets are complete.
“We can’t risk putting the kids at school without toilets because we may witness an outbreak of diseases associated with dirtiness,” he added.
