A class two pupil died on Tuesday morning along the Garissa highway when a Thika-Makongeni Public Service Vehicle ran over him as he crossed the road at a pedestrian crossing point.
According to an eyewitness, the vehicle was speeding and the driver lost control as he approached the pedestrian crossing, hitting the deceased and killing him on the spot.
Confirming the incident at the accident scene, Thika traffic police base commander Francis Muthamia condemned the act, saying that it is the worst offence that one can commit while driving.
He added that the pedestrian crossing is set for pedestrians, urging drivers to be careful when approaching such areas.
Muthamia warned those found committing accidents on pedestrian crossing signs, saying they risk heavy fines and punishment.
"This will cost him a lot as the road rules and regulations are well set for them to be careful and always stop at such points. We should always be careful when driving," said Muthamia.
He further emphasised on the importance of speed governors on public vehicles, adding that most vehicles do not follow the set rules.
“It is important to have these regulators fitted since they help any vehicle from over speeding. We will check if this has a working speed governor before the driver is taken to court,” added Muthamia.
The body of the minor was taken to Thika Level five Hospital mortuary.
