Nakuru Chief officer of Heath Samuel Mwaura has appealed to schools to install washing points for children in the area.
Mwaura cited that most schools do not have washing bays for children after to wash their hands after visiting latrines.
According to Mwaura, this posed a health risk as the children were often using their dirty hands to hold food and eat.
“Considering that they are small children many might end up inserting their fingers in their mouths and might end up contracting dirt related diseases. They risk getting cholera and dysentery from such activities,” feared Mwaura.
He called on schools that did not have running water to consider having such vital necessity in learning institutions.
“Schools can use skyplasts that have taps. It is a simple and cost effective way of ensuring that the children can have clean hands after visiting latrines,” added Mwaura.
He was speaking to the press in his office where he called on various stakeholders in the water sector to solve the water crisis in schools.
“Water is a basic fundamental requirement and it is hard for students to live without it. We are putting such young children at a great health risk by failing to provide them with it,” cited Mwaura.
