Schools in Mavoko Sub County, Machakos County have been urged to plant trees so as to help conserve environment and improve the region's weather conditions.
The call was made by the area's Deputy Agriculture Officer, Hoseah Swanya, who said the region faced unbearable weather.
Swanya who made the remarks at Star Sheikh Academy when he made an official visit yesterday, said children were ambassadors of hope.
He said that the children could bring hope as far as hostile weather conditions in the region were concerned arguing that if used, the government objective of 10% tree cover per parcel of land nationally would be achieved.
"Given the numbers of children across the nation and their strengths, this project can be achieved if we engage the schools fully, said Swanya.
He proposed that all schools from the region assign children a tree from class one, own and take good care of it till he/she sits for Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).
Swanya said that the trees would be able to grow on themselves after eight years arguing that the strategy had been practiced elsewhere in the country and proved practical and successful.
He said this would hel improve forest cover, protect water catchment area, improve weather and also earn a number of those who take the project seriously favorable livelihoods.
The officer said that the project should be extended to all training institutions including secondary, politechnics, universities whether private or public.
