Three schools have been re-opened after a dispute between parents and sand harvesters were resolved in Masinga, Machakos County on Monday.
Mbingoni, Kaonyweni and Inyanzaa Primary Schools were closed down on Monday last week after parents withdrew their children protesting illegal sand harvesting in the region.
The parents alleged the illegal activity was leading to land degradation thereby resulting to water shortage.
Machakos County Commissioner Matilda Sakwa intervened for the schools to reopen.
Sakwa said parents agreed to allow their children return to school after an agreement to stop sand harvesting was reached.
"Learning should go on in the 3 affected schools following a week long standoff, the local community agreed to end sand harvesting which has resulted to water shortages. Any cartel found hiring youths to harvest sand will be arrested and prosecuted,” Sakwa said.
Sakwa warned local youths against participating in sand harvesting which is a banned trade in the area.
