All schools in Kenya will close for two weeks so as to allow time to conduct the the August General Election, it has emerged.According to the Standard, Education CS Fred Matiang’i made the proposal last Friday during a Nairobi consultative meeting.
The CS said all schools and colleges will have to be closed by August 4, four days to the polls, so that parents can make travel arrangements for their children.
October last year, term dates released by Matian'gi indicated that the institutions would be closed for three weeks starting August 4 up to August 28.
“Closing dates for schools and colleges at the end of the second term should be staggered between July 28 and August 4, 2017. Parents must be notified of any changes to the learning calendar,” he said Friday.
He also revealed that no education institution will be available for campaign and strategy meetings by political bodies ahead of the polls to safeguard property.
“These actions are illegal and will certainly upset the operations of school programmes, including the opening of schools which begin next week,” he said.
