Cabinet secretary of Education Fred Matiang’i has merged boards of primary and secondary schools sharing a compound. The CS said that such schools will now be run by an overall principal with a deputy for primary and another for the secondary school.

This announcement was made by the minister on Monday during the launch of the Form one selection exercise at Kenya Institute for Curriculum Development.

Matiang'i noted that performance has often beset with legitimacy squabbles and turf war where primary and secondary school share a compound.

“Performance where both primary and secondary sections in the same environment has often been beset with legitimacy squabbles and turf war which tend to compromise teaching and learning programmes,” said Matiang’i.

He noted that the Ministry, together with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), will immediately consolidate the management of such schools effective 2018, so that they will be under one Board of Management.

“With immediate effect, we are dissolving the boards and creating one, so that if a primary school and a secondary school are in one compound they will have one board,” said Matiang’i

”The move will occasion harmony and synergy in the utilization of resources and infrastructure facilities, some of which lie defunct because resources are duplicated, and institutions compartmentalized, creating non-functional facilities.”
