A Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) official now wants schools not to be used as polling stations in the repeat presidential election slated for October 26.Joe Mungai, KNUT Thika branch secretary, asked the IEBC to move polling centres from schools to churches and other public amenities."Politicians should not terrorise our schools. We have seen enough furniture destroyed during elections," Mungai said. The official added: "Most of the schools in Thika Town Constituency were used as major polling centres. Unfortunately, the people mishandled the chairs and desks, leaving quite a number broken."Mungai further faulted the decision to change dates for some papers in the KCSE examination to allow the repeat presidential election."It is unfortunate that politics in this country have negative effects on crucial exercises such as national examinations. We shouldn't allow school calendar to be affected by elections," he added.
