Mr Kassim said schools during this third term have been grappling with low turnouts as many parents have moved with their children to other areas in search of water and pasture for their livestock.

Some schools in the regions affected by drought have been forced to close due to the fast escalating drought.

Mr Kassim said that the school going children have dropped out of school to help their parents in search of the precious commodity.

“The drought has affected learning in many schools in the region. This term the children had not gone to school due to lack of school fees as their parents depend on the livestock as a source of income,” said the MP.

Speaking at a press conference at parliamentary buildings, Mr Kassim urged the county and the national government to step up drought mitigation measures in all affected areas to ensure that the affected families receive basic items needed for their survival.

The MP further said the drought has also caused conflicts among herders occasioning frequent frictions due to scramble for pasture.

“I appeal to the government to continue with the mitigation measures to combat the effects of the current drought affecting some parts of the country. We have lost a big number of our livestock due to prevailing drought. The initiative of food rationing by the government is not enough,” said Mr Kassim.
