The teaching of mother tongue is expected to resume following the approval of books for four communities under the new curriculum.
Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development chief executive Julius Jwan said Monday that the books are written in Gikuyu, Kiakamba, Dholuo and Ekegisii.
He told Parliament's Education committee chaired by Julius Melly that the learning material is available in Gikuyu Grade 1 and 2, Kikamba Grade 1, 2, and 3, Dholuo Grade 2 and Ekegisii Grade 1.
These four communities account for close to 44 percent of the country's total population.
But Matayos MP Geoffrey Odanga questioned why the rest of the communities had been excluded in the program.
"As KICD, we only evaluate what is submitted dto us," Dr Jwan said.
The program that will be launched in 2019 will see native languages taught from nursery to class three.
According to Dr Jwan, the education curriculum will aid in the development of oral, reading and writing competence among young learners.
Kenya used to have the same program in the 80's but was removed. All communities then, were included in the program.
"The aim of language activities at pre-primary school level is to enable learners to express themselves fluently," Jwan said.
