The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) National Assistant Treasurer, John Matiang'i, has warned the Ministry of Education and County Education Boards against approving appointments of semi-literate schools board members.
Matiang'i said that appointing semi-literate school's board members will compromise education standards.
Speaking to this writer in Kisii town, Matiang'i warned politicians against interfering with the appointment of board members saying that such interference will lead to appointment of incompetent people.
"As an educationist and teachers trade unionist member I have passion for children’s education hence would not like to see people messing up with it,” said Matiang’i.
He told parents that they should exercise oversight role and ensure that politics are not dragged in education matters.
Matiang’i noted that schools whose board members are illiterate perform poorly in the national exams.
