Kibera schools have adopted the solar water disinfection as a way of treating water before drinking.
Joyce Mure, a teacher at Olympic Primary School, said the method has helped pupils get clean drinking water.
"The method only requires sun rays to treat water. We ask pupils to bring small bottles of water and put the water in the sun to get some heat. Through this we believe germs get killed before the pupils drink water," she said.
"As any human being, water is essential and to children they can drink or eat anything as long as to end thirsty. This method is good and it does not require more skills. It is a free of charge method. Buying kerosene to boil water using stoves with the high prices of kerosene is hard to many residents of Kibera. The solar water disinfection method is suitable and works," she added.
She noted that despite the challenges of water shortages in Kibera she said they manage to utilise the available water to serve the pupils and as well the staff members.
"Provided you have water and you feel like the water is not safe since we fetch from taps, it is good to disinfect it and the best and easy way is through the solar water disinfection method. As a school we encourage pupils to do the same thing at their homes to avoid risks involved due to drinking dirty water," she concluded.
About 20 schools in the slums now use the solar water disinfection.
