Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has vowed to close secret bank accounts operated by City Hall.

This is after a report tabled in the county assembly chamber revealed that the county runs 31 bank accounts.

The findings tabled last week shows four accounts are held at the Central Bank and 27 others with commercial banks.

"We are looking into the accounts and we are only going to retain the necessary ones and close the others," Sonko told journalists on Wednesday.

Public Finance Management Act requires that the county governments should have only two main accounts.

The report by Budget and Appropriations Committee had sought to know the status and need for some of the accounts, with some dating back to the defunct city council.
