A section of the Standard Gauge Railway on Saturday collapsed, raising suspicion on the quality of work the Chinese contractor is putting in to the project.
Kenyans quickly went to the social media to castigate the China Road and Bridge Corporation over suspected shoddy work the company was doing.
This comes after word previously circulated that sections of the railway had already cracked even before the route came into active use.
"These Chinese builders can't be serious. This is the situation of SGR even before Kenyans can use it. Did we pay billions for such a shoddy job?" said a twitter user.
However, Transport Principal Secretary Irungu Nyakera on Sunday defended the project saying that the destruction had come in due to unexpected weather changes and that the project was still sound.
"The rains came before everything was tied up and hence this is normal in any ongoing construction site. The contractor will fast-track while ensuring integrity of the line is beyond question," Irungu said in a statement.
The SGR project is one of Jubilee government’s major projects and is expected to reach completion in December 2017.
The 609km-long line connecting Mombasa to Nairobi is being constructed to ferry passengers and cargo between the two cities.
