Just days after another Al-Shabaab attack that left several dead in Mandera, security in the North Eastern region has been beefed after the militia group struck Damasa destroying a communication mast and a key borehole.
Speaking to the Nation, area police boss Bossita Omukolongo confirmed that the 1am incident had targetted a Safaricom mast, cutting communication between Kenya's Damasa military camp and his station.
The Lafey police boss said they were not sure on the number of Al-Shabaab in the region, adding that villagers accounted to having seen about a hundred of them on trucks.
"We have seen nothing although those in the area are talking of more than 100 armed men," said Omukolongo.
Intelligence reports on Friday pointed out that militants from El-Adde had been moving to Borache on lorries, Land Cruisers and motorcycles.
The caravan was believed to be targetting the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) camp in Damasa and Somalia's National Army (SNA) camp in Borache.
Mr Omukolongo however said security had been tightened in readiness for any eventuality.
"We are unable to communicate to the military camp but all security measures are in place," he said.
