Mohamed Maalim, said the move is aimed at averting any potential terror attacks.

This comes after the National Police Service issued a terror alert during the month of Ramadhan.

Maalim said ferries using the channel will be given armed escort as part of the measures to boost security.

"Ferries will now be given armed escort as part of our measures to prevent a possible terror attack. All vehicles must be screened before being allowed into the ferries to ensure deadly weapons are not being transported across the channel,” said the commissioner.

He faulted security officers manning the channel for not subjecting the vehicles to proper screening.

"I went to the channel as an ordinary citizen last week and was shocked by how security agents did not conduct proper searches of vehicles as they got into the ferries,” said Maalim.

He said the situation will now change as all passengers and vehicles will be screened before being allowed to board the ferries.
