The Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) kicked off smoothly in Kitui county yesterday morning. Speaking to the press, County director of education Susan Murerwa confirmed that all the 36,480 registered candidates were available to sit the exam. 

There is candidate from Mithiani Primary School who will be sitting her exam in hospital after falling ill. The pupil, whose identity has not been disclosed, was admitted at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) a few months ago and is expected to undertake the exercise from the facility as she recovers.

Sources confirmed that there are 18,439 girls and 18,041 boys who registered for KCPE from the county. An Officer in-charge of Kitui GK Prison Daniel Kiamba said that the facility has 14 men inmates who are expected to sit for these years examinations.

He also said that the facility management is optimistic that the students who perform very well in the examinations because they have made adequate preparation towards the same. “We hope they perform well. Those serving long sentences who excel will be transferred to Embu Prison, which has a secondary school wing, to continue with their education,” he said.
