Security was heightened on Saturday morning as Deputy President William Ruto crossed the Likoni ferry to the mainland from the island.
Operations briefly came to a halt at the channel to pave way for Ruto who arrived in Mombasa on Friday to commission Jomvu Kuu-Rabai road.
He said close to Sh70 billion would be used to roll out various development projects at the Kenyan coast.
At around 10.30am, Ruto boarded MV Harambee heading to South Coast, particularly Kwale county, where he was to be welcomed by Governor Salim Mvurya.
He was received on board by the Kenya Ferry Service (KFS) Managing Director Bakari Gowa, Head of Departments and members of staff.
