Garissa governor Ali Korane said repeated cases of insecurity in Garissa County are counterproductive to attracting investors in the county.

The governor was speaking at a Garissa hotel during a meeting with Swiss ambassador to Kenya Ralf Heckner and a delegation of UN implementing agencies representatives.

Mr. Korane said there is a need for various stakeholders to work together in creating a positive image for the area that has been associated with terrorism.

The governor further said opening up the area for business activities and investments would provide employment opportunities to the youth in the county and help fight radicalization.

He added that the Al-Shabaab menace in the region needs to be addressed in order to strengthen devolution to ensure the county makes progress in development.

“What is derailing devolution in Garissa County is terrorism caused by Al-Shabaab militants, lack of employment opportunities for youth and drought.”

“The national government needs to intervene and improve security in Garissa. No investor will come to Garissa for fear of losing their investment due to insecurity,” said Mr. Korane.
