Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has promised to take Kenya to the World Cup in 2022 in Qatar.
The Tottenham Hotspurs player made the vow to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga while paying him a courtsey call at his Capitol Hill office.
It was Mr Odinga who made it public after sharing the news on his Facebook page.
“Great meeting the Kenyan Legend Victor Wanyama of Tottenham Hotspurs. He stopped by Capitol Hill and promised to carry Kenya to the next World Cup,” wrote Mr Odinga.
The opposition chief congratulated Wanyama for mentoring young Kenyans who look up to him.
“I congratulated him on mentoring young Kenyans and encouraging them to follow his footsteps and lift the standards of football and professional sports in general in the country," continued the post.
The pledge by the football star sounds ridiculous considering that Kenya was ranked 112 in the FIFA ranking as at June 7, 2018.
Harambee Stars have struggled to make it to the Africa Cup of Nations. Kenya was disqualified at the group stages after winning just one match against Burkina Faso and lost to Mali and Senegal.
