The senate successfully passed the contentious Election Law (Amendment) Bill, without any amendments.

During a seating that ended close to midnight, the Jubilee senators pushed the bill and ensured it was passed, paving way for President Uhuru Kenyatta to assent it into law.

There was however spirited efforts from the opposition sentors, led by minority leader Moses Wetangula, James Orengo and Prof Anyang Nyongo.

“Bulldoze what you want but don’t drag our image into the mud. Let’s be bipartisan and salvage the image of this House,” Mr Wetang’ula said.

During the vote, 26 lawmakers voted in support of the Bill as 10 opposed ensuring the bill went through the same way it did in the parliamentary assembly.

Cord has accused the Jubilee government of planning to rig the next elections, by passing the amendments to use manual back up in case the electronic process failed.

The opposition had further warned to take to the streets if the laws are passed, and all eyes will be on their (opposition) next move.

The Opposition wants electronic system used in the next general election whereas Jubilee has maintained that a backup must be used to ensure eligible voters are not denied the chance to vote.
