Speaking on Thursday when the committee was on a familiarisation tour of Nakuru County, Mbugua attributed the lagging infrastructural development in counties to the little funds allocated for such projects.

He said, “Limited budgetary allocation is hindering county governments from rehabilitating more roads. The senate committee mandated to manage roads and transport should intervene and ensure that counties are allocated more in the next budget to enable such projects to be carried out without hitches.”

“Most counties are yet to upgrade 50 percent of the total county roads due to inadequate funds,” Kinuthia said.

Led by committee chairman Kisii Senator Chris Obure, the committee has embarked on county tours to determine the state of road networks in the areas.

Mbugua also asserted that Nakuru County is in dire need of rehabilitating its roads since only a small section out of the total road network is tarmacked.

“Nakuru County has a road network of 12,000 km but only 996 km is tarmacked. We have done a lot in improving road network but our efforts to roll out more projects on rehabilitating roads faces challenges due to budgetary constraints,” Kinuthia added.
