The senate public accounts and investments committee plans to launch a probe into alleged financial misappropriation in Kisumu County. The committee chairman Boni Khalwale said there is a petition that has been sent to the senate already. Khalwale said the speaker of the senate, Ekwe Ethuro, has written to his committee to dispense the petition. “I know the problems in Kisumu County and I can confirm to you that we have a letter from the speaker asking my committee to go ahead and probe,” he said. The chairman said that what still holds his committee is the availability of the financial year report for 2013/2014. He says the auditor general has delayed the release of that report by two months. He, however, said the committee will again wait for the ruling on summoning governors to be able to probe the financial impropriety in Kisumu. Speaking in Kisumu where the committee will be sitting for three days to write an interim report on the transition period financial usage, Khalwale said his committee is up to the task. “It is just a small hiccup that we shall overcome and roll out the probe,” he said. Khalwale, who is also the Kakamega senator, said the senate will delink the budget of the county assembly and that of the governor. He said the one central budget has led to a lack of oversight role by the ward representatives who are sometimes 'pocketed by the governor'.
