Plans by the Nairobi County government to outlaw commercial sex work in the city is not only impulsive but also unfair, Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga has said.
The senator said that the commercial sex workers depend on the ‘trade’ to earn a living, adding that passing a motion against it will be a major blow to their lives.
The lawmaker has called upon the Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) to provide jobs for the workers before condemning them.
She also asked different parties to listen to the plight of sex workers before pushing for the outlawing of the trade in the CBD. The senator took to social media and posted:
“I strongly oppose the move and demand that commercial sex workers be given audience so that a proper solution is found. Many do not do it because they enjoy but simply because they need to survive,” as quoted by Nation.
Her stand has been backed by the Atheists, who argue that commercial sex worker is not a crime since the people involved have voluntarily joined the trade.
In a statement signed by AIK head Harrison Mumia, the group said that it is against plans to outlaw commercial sex workers.
The increasing number of commercial sex workers in Nairobi has continued to raise concern among different groups.
Women as you as 18 years keep flooding the streets and different joints across the CBD especially on Friday to engage in sex in return for money.
