The decision by the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy(Cord) to nominate a team that is expected to take part in negotiations restructuring the embattled electoral body IEBC has been termed as ‘timely’ by nominated Senator Janet Ong’era.
The opposition released the list which will be led by Siaya Senator James Orengo and his Machakos counterpart Johnstone Muthama hoping that the government will succumb to pressure and also constitute its team.
On Thursday, Ong’era hailed the opposition for showing the way and urged the government to drop hard stands for the sake of the country.
“I want to laud Cord leadership for unveiling the team expected to take part in the dialogue. The move is timely before the crisis escalates. We are one country and no one is ready for unprecedented violence," she said.
“Time has come for the government to drop the hard stands and also select people to engage the other group in structured dialogue. There comes a time when the country is bigger than the law itself,” she said.
The one time ODM executive director also urged the embattled commissioners to willingly resign for the sake of peace.
“We all understand that when one team questions the credibility of an independent commission, then the issue of independence fades. Let the commissioners leave for the sake of peace. We cannot be held to ransom by few people,” she added.
