The decision by Kenya Films and Classification Board to ban airing of sexuality suggestive adverts and alcohol in media between 5 am and 10 pm has been hailed by Senator Janet Ong’era as a milestone towards promoting morality.

The board through Chairperson Ezekiel Mutua made the announcement on Tuesday during the launching of new regulations in the film industry.

Speaking on the phone in a Wednesday interview, Ong’era said the move will improve morality among the youths and help curb raising cases of premarital sex.

“I would like to thank KFCB for the regulation which is a great milestone towards promoting good morality in our society whose morals have diminished in the recent past,” Ong’era said.

“As much as the advertisement industry is important to our economy, such contents which are morally questionable must be thoroughly regulated," said Ong'era.

"I am happy with the decision. Perhaps we can even deal with rising cases of premarital sex,” she added.

She also said the new regulations will combat alcohol consumption among school going children since they will have limited time to interact with televisions and radios late in the night.

“We also want to rout out consumption of alcohol among school going children. Many of them are influenced by the media content but with the limitation or airing period we are likely to have a positive result in terms of combating consumption among school going children,” she said.

She also called for stringent rules on permitted businesses operating video and films saying they should be heavily penalised if found airing pedophile contents.
