Nyamira Senator Okongo Mong’are has said Kisii County leadership is to blame for skirmishes witnessed in the border town of Keroka in the past recent weeks.
Kisii and Nyamira county leaders have engaged in a war of words over control of the town, with residents from either side engaging the police in running battles.
But Mr Mong’are who spoke on Sunday accused Kisii County leadership over what he called ‘forceful occupation’ and challenged National Lands Commission (NLC) to chip in and salvage the region from the escalating crisis.
“I am disappointed that we can sign an MoU over the ownership of the town and our friends from Kisii go ahead to violate it by deploying revenue collectors in the town against the agreement,” he said.
“The Kisii County leadership should take the blame because we had discussed the issue and came up with a temporary solution. I think time has come for NLC to intervene and help us locate the boundary before the crisis escalates,” he said.
He also warned the government from establishment a police station on the territory believed to be part of Kisii County, saying the current police station in Nyamira side of the town has the ability to beef up security in the town.
“I hear that Kisii County is pushing for another police station. That will be wastage of tax payers’ money because we have an existing police station. They should stop inciting residents henceforth,” he said.
“I don’t see what we are going to discuss on Monday yet we had ironed out everything. I will not be part of the team because we now need an intervention from NLC and if it doesn’t work, we take a petition to Senate,” he said.
