Kisumu Senator Prof Anyang Nyong’o is calling for the establishment of Kisumu City Management Board as enshrined in the Urban Area and Cities Act.
Nyong’o said that in the absence of the board, the residents of the city risk losing its assets and liabilities.
He said that Governor Jack Ranguma instead appointed acting city manager who cannot perform the duties diligently without the board.
“Instead of setting up a board, the governor appointed a city manager in acting capacity and it is clear in the law that the city manager cannot work in a vacuum, the board must be there,” he said.
The senator called upon Ranguma to institute the board as a matter of urgency to take over the running and management of the city.
Speaking to the press in Kisumu on Saturday, Prof Nyong’o said the city has large tracks of land and other assets that if not managed properly then will be grabbed.
He reported that he has written several letters to the governor to constitute the Board without success.
Prof Nyong’o said the life of the Board was to run concurrently with that of the county government.
He said that it is almost three years since the county government was put in place yet there is no Board thus frustrating effort of the acting city manager to bring order in the city.
“The acting city manager is frustrated, she cannot perform without a board. I have written letters to Ranguma to set up this board and he is taking the matter lightly,” he said.
