The arrest and intimidation of politicians fighting for the rights of the people is unconstitutional, Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo has said. The lawmaker warned police officers against arresting and mistreating leaders fighting for the right of residents in Coast region to own land.He cited the cases involving Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and Mtepeni Ward MCA Victor Mwaganda, saying such incidents were uncalled for. Speaking during an interview with The Star, Madzayo said the two leaders did nothing wrong, adding that they were fighting for the sake of the electorate. He called upon police officers not to harass leaders who raise alarm over different issues, adding that the arrest of the two was uncalled for. "We saw what happened to Joho and the MCA all because of land issues, yet there are people who have to seek help from their leaders," said Madzayo, as quoted by the daily. The senator also said that the increased cases of politicians being arrested and harassed by the Jubilee regime are raising eyebrows."The arbitrary arrest of political leaders we are witnessing under Uhuru Kenyatta’s leadership is becoming too much,” he added.
