She further challenged members of the fourth estate to continue working for the common good of ordinary people.

This comes as journalists across the world celebrate the annual Media Freedom Day.

Speaking to this writer on Tuesday, Ms Ong’era urged journalists to continue reporting objectively, and vowed to rally legislators to protect media freedom as enshrined in the constitution.

“I wish to join members of the press as they celebrate the World Media Freedom Day. The media is instrumental in shaping our society and I won’t hesitate to say Kenyan media is indomitable,” she said.

She added : “They have remained objective and determined to ensure the public is informed, educated and entertained since those are their core values. As a leader, I will always defend the media freedom as enshrined in our constitution because without it, Kenya would be in rags today.”

She also urged various media organisations to ensure all journalists are trained on journalistic principles to avoid cases of misreporting and bribery in certain quarters.

“I completely agree that our media is doing a great job and as leaders we are determined to ensure they are protected to execute their mandates,” she said.

She added, “However, there are some instances of misreporting and this is the area we need to improve on. We have media groups which are responsible for training and I hope they will perfect on that. Also, we need to minimize cases of journalist being compromised,” she added.
