Speaking on Monday, Outa noted that the launch of the multi-billion project was long overdue.

He explained that delayed opening of the mall was hurting the economy of Kisumu County.

"Constructions works are over and we do not understand why the mall is still closed," he said.

According to the Senator, close to 90 percent of the mall's space is already rented out and traders were ready to stock merchandise.

On Monday, protests rocked Kanyakwar area in Kisumu as residents protested over allegations that the government was planning to sell the mall to business tycoons.

The residents demanded that the mall should be operated by the government adding that private business people would exploit workers.

Dr Evans Atera, the Managing Director of the Lake Basin Development Authority addressed the demonstrators and promised them that locals will be given first priority when hiring workers.

According to Atera, the mall will be opened on March 16.
