Uasin Gishu Senator Prof. Margret Kamar has asked the national government to hasten the release of funds to farmers who supplied their maize to the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB).
Speaking after a meeting with farmers representatives from across the county at the Teachers Advisory Centre (TAC) in Eldoret town on Monday, Kamar said many farmers are suffering following the delay in releasing the funds.
"The government has to do it immediately to ease the farmers from stress," said the Jubilee Senator.
She also urged the government to put in place mechanisms that will help rid cartels in the agriculture sector.
"The government must see a way of doing away with the cartels in order for farmers to enjoy their fruits," added Kamar.
Farmers in the North Rift region have been complaining after the delay in the release of over Sh5 billion for the maize supplied.
Some of them who spoke during the meeting said the delay had affected the education of most f their children as agriculture is their maize source of income.
They have a well asked the top leadership in the country President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto to intervene and ensure the cash is released without further delays.
