Sonko of the Jubilee coalition, has stated he will vie for the Nairobi governorship, but may find himself in a fix ahead of the 2017 elections if he doesn’t make a smart move now.

On Sunday, four Jubilee MPs from the Mt Kenya region threw their weight behind Water minister Eugene Wamalwa’s candidature for the capital city’s governorship.

"We cannot let the governor's seat go to the opposition again. We lost once but now we are well organized and we know who we want for Nairobi governor and it is Eugene Wamalwa," they said.

The legislators included Kieni MP Kanini Kega, Ferdinand Waititu of Kabete, Jude Njomo (Kiambu) and Mpuru Aburi of Tigania East.

Senator Sonko has in the recent times taken a low profile and seems to be weighing his options.

Last month, the flamboyant Senator hinted at a function in Machakos County that he could join Cord if Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka is named the flag bearer.

“For the sake of our community, leaders must unite, I traversed the country with Kalonzo. Even now I am ready as long as he is the flag bearer of Cord,” said the Senator in July.

But in a quick rejoinder on Monday, Nairobi County MPs John Njoroge of Kasarani,  Embakasi North's James Gakuya and Ben Mutura (Makadara) distanced themselves from the declaration by their Central Kenya counterparts saying the position is open to all candidates.

This should however be a red signal to Sonko that it is time he pulled a first one to clinch the top seat in the county.

Other Jubilee leaders seeking to unseat the incumbent Governor Evans Kidero of Cord are Dagoretti South MP Dennis Waweru, Miguna Miguna, Bishop Margaret Wanjiru and nominated MP Johnson Sakaja.
