Nyamira Senator Okong’o Mong’are has accused his Nairobi counterpart Mike Mbuvi alias Sonko of lacking critical thinking after the two exchanged bitter words on Wednesday during a Public Accounts Committee meeting.
Mr Sonko had accused Mr Mong’are of 'seeing' Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero so as to defend him when he (Kidero) appeared before the PAC for grilling.
Kidero was being questioned over the county's financial spending for the 2013-14 financial year.
But now Mr Mong’are has blasted his Senate colleague and demanded that he becomes objective when dealing with critical issues.
“I am shocked that Sonko could make such blatant claims about me. I have never met Governor Kidero in person and saying that I had seen him before coming to the committee is a lie,” Okongo said in a phone conversation with this writer.
“I don’t defend impunity and when Sonko makes murder claims before a committee, I think he lacks objectivity and critical thinking. We only deal with audit issues and not court-related matters. He should have taken the murder claims to court,” an angry Okong'o added.
He urged his senatorial colleagues to be guided by integrity rather than personal desires if at all they were serious about fighting corruption in counties.
“We must be guided by integrity as Senators. Our main value is to ensure proper management of counties and it is sometimes silly to let personal issues overrun our mandate,” he said.
Mr Sonko and Kidero reportedly exchanged blows during the Senate committee meeting and Mong’are was singled out to have been at the centre of the row.
