Nyamira Senator Okong’o Mong’are has vehemently opposed a plot by governors to push for transferring of all roads functions from National government terming it a ‘crazy’ move.
Governors are reportedly pushing for transferring of all road functions to their jurisdictions in the ongoing Devolution Conference at Meru.
Mong’are, who skipped the function citing frustrations from county government said the move will severely affect development of the nation due to inability of counties to work on the feeder roads which are already under their care.
“It’s crazy that some busy bodies are in Meru pushing for transferring of all road functions to the counties. I will oppose the move and hope my fellow senators will do the same,” Okong’o said.
“These people are unable to manage feeder roads in villages and this means we should be prepared for a disaster in case national government relinquishes the function. They should first show us that they can manage to maintain feeder roads, a function I think they have performed dismally,” he added.
The Ford Kenya senator accused governors of mismanagement and challenged MCAs to rise above board and fight misappropriation of resources at the county level.
“We are rarely involved as senators by these counties and its time that MCAs woke up and questioned unscrupulous management that leads to misappropriation of funds. Let the national government hold the remaining roads function till these counties become of age,” he said while addressing residents of Kiambere.
