Politicians calling for a referendum have been asked to work with the government to address challenges facing Kenyans instead of pushing for the plebiscite.
Addressing the press after holding a meeting with several Nakuru County leaders, West Pokot Senator John Lonyangapuo lashed out at those agitating for a referendum, saying it is a waste of time and resources.
“The politicians should promote development. The country has no resources to conduct a referendum at this time,” said the senator.
Lonyangapuo asked the Opposition to wait for the 2017 general election where they can raise their grievances. He said time for politicking has ended and leaders should fulfil the pledges they made to Kenyans instead of fuelling hatred through referendum calls.
The senator called for unity among leaders in the wake of insecurity in some parts of the country, saying security is a responsibility of every leader.
At the same time, the senator asked governors to exercise accountability even as they initiate development projects. He also asked them to respond to accountability audits, saying no one is above the law.
