Kiambu Senator Kimani Wamatangi is now proposing the death sentence for people convicted of corruption.

The senator argued that stiff punishment is the only way to win the fight against graft in the country.Speaking to journalists in Kiambu Town on Saturday, the Jubilee Senator said that corruption should be classified alongside crimes like treason, robbery with violence and murder whose punishment is death.He said that the vice (corruption) has eaten up the society and unless punitive measures are taken, it will remain a threat to development.While supporting the purge on graft suspects by the government, Wamatangi also proposed a new approach in the fight against the vice."Investigating and prosecuting agencies should review their approach in the fight against graft to achieve results," he said.The Senator said that the tactics being employed in fighting graft have not borne fruits.“The DCI, the DPP, Assets and Recovery agencies must sit down and come up with proper approaches to tame graft," he said.The lawmaker also called for political goodwill across the political divide in the fight against graft.He said that leaders must unite and support the government as it fights to tame corruption.On Friday, during the Madaraka day celebrations at Kinoru stadium in Meru, President Uhuru Kenyatta said his government is committed to ending corruption.The president exuded confidence in the DCI and the DPP as they move to tame corruption.He ordered for vetting of all procurement officers in government to ascertain their source of wealth.On Tuesday, 33 suspects linked to the Sh9 Billion scam at the NYS were arraigned and charged in court.The suspects among them Public Service Principal Secretary Lilian Omollo and NYS Director General Richard Ndubai pleaded not guilty to the graft charges.
