Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior has been the latest leader to hail President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga for putting aside their political differences for the benefit of the nation.

Speaking on AM Live on Tuesday morning, the lawmaker, however, noted that the same is not enough to realize their joint pursuit for national reconciliation and healing.

He advised the two to lead their allies in facing and apologizing to Kenyans who have been affected by their political wrangles, especially the families of victims of the post-August 8, 2017 presidential contest unrest.

''By simply shaking hands and announcing their reconciliation they have not repaired the effects of their past enmity. They should now visit the families that lost their relatives and those who were injured after the August 8 elections and apologize and also offer the needed assistance,'' said the leader.

This comes at a time when the leaders have also since incorporated their deputies into the handshake, with Deputy President William Ruto and Wiper Democratic Movement (WDM) leader and Odinga's deputy in the National Super Alliance (NASA) block, Kalonzo Musyoka, recently joining in.

According to Mutula, however, the latest development will not reflect on the opposition's operations, maintaining that it will continue with its oversight role.

''Their union does not stop the opposition from correcting the government when we feel it is doing the wrong thing. We will keep asking questions,'' added the lawmaker.
