In order for Kenya to hold a free and fair general election next year, Nyamira Senator Kennedy Mong'are is recommending a referendum to change the polls dates from August 2017 to March 2018.

This, he noted, will allow the new commissioners who are yet to be appointed, ample time to prepare for the polls.

Speaking during a press conference in Kisii on Sunday, Mong'are said Kenya risks going the 2007-2008 way if the IEBC is not adequately prepared.

"Around 9 million eligible voters have not been registered nor do we have election materials in place, The Johann Kriegler report recommended that in order for Kenya to have free and fair elections, the commissioners must be given a minimum of two years to prepare. How then can we go into the elections if they have been in office for less than six months?" noted Mong'are.

The Senator further asked President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga to shift their focus on either retaining the presidency or winning the State House race respectively and instead, inform Kenyans that the country is not ready for the August 2017 elections.

"The electoral body requires over Sh45 billion to conduct polls and it has only been given 1% of that amount and remember those seeking governance had earlier acquired national political offices after Kenyans shed blood. We won't go the same way where people are given positions as a result of bloodshed," said Mong'are.
