As the Jubilee government makes its last efforts to winthe hearts of Kenyans ahead of 2017 elections, Nakuru Senator James Mungai has renewed the call to revive pyrethrum sector.
Speaking on Monday in Nakuru, Mungai said the government should implement proposals forwarded by stakeholders in pyrethrum farming.
“Nakuru County is well endowed and besides doing very well in milk farming, pyrethrum farming comes in second place and because it crumbled, we want to ask the government to do everything possible and soonest possible to revive the sector,” he said.
He said that President Uhuru Kenyatta talked about the ailing sector during his last trip to Nakuru and pyrethrum farmers in the region are upbeat over its reviving.
“He (Kenyatta) talked about it when he was here two weeks ago and farmers are eagerly waiting to see the government work towards opening a brand new pyrethrum sector,” said Mungai.
In a meeting held by Nakuru and Nyandarua Counties leaders early this year, they prescribed that the government offset a debt incurred by the current Pyrethrum Board of Kenya and reconstitute it among other counter measures.
Felix Kinoti, a pyrethrum farmer from Kuresoi North said that he is anxiously waiting for the sector to reverberate again as he was raised by his parents using proceeds from the farming.
